When people talk about scrapbooking, so many things come to mind: clutter, art materials sticking on everything and glitters flying everywhere. Truth be told, starting your first scrapbook can be overwhelming if you don’t keep in mind the one important element of scrapbooking: preserving memories. Here are some helpful tips you can use to make your first scrapbook experience a gratifying endeavor.

Determine what the scrapbook is for.

Is it a gift for an oldie or a baby? Is it for inclusion in a time capsule? Your goals for the scrapbook will determine everything you put there, including the materials you are going to use (do not use perishable materials or those that could rot and infect the rest of the scrapbook with decay if you plan on keeping the scrapbook in a time capsule).

The size and style of your scrapbook also needs to conform to your goals. Keep it small if you plan on sending it out, and make a huge page if you plan on framing it or using it as a conversation piece in your living room.

The basic supplies must always be available to you

You can use rare materials as accents but the major components of your scrapbook must be made of materials that can readily be bought in thrift shops and bookstores. Remember that future generations may want to add something to your scrapbook so make sure they can easily duplicate the theme of your book by using easy to find materials.

Make copies of every photo you use

It doesn’t hurt to make duplicate copies of the photos you are using in your album. This way, you can be as creative as you want with your scrapbook photos without worrying about accidentally destroying them (because you have reserve copies anyway).
