Stamp collecting is popular but few know why anymore. Younger generations must be able to understand that this is not only an interesting hobby, it’s also a way to learn about history and other cultures. Many of the collectible stamps are valuable; and some are really rare.

If someone gives you a collection of stamps, the first thing you need to do is buy an album and special stamp tapes (hinges). You will also need some special tools like tweezers for handling the stamps, particularly the older ones. The details of the stamps must be preserved well to maintain their value, so keeping them in mint condition is important.

How to Collect Stamps and Maintain a Stamp Collection if You’re a Beginner?

1. If you don’t already have a large collection of stamps to mount, you can start by collecting stamps on the letters you received during the last holiday. Meticulously rip away the envelope encircling the stamp but be mindful not to rip apart the stamp itself. Next, immerse the stamp in lukewarm water. The residual piece of paper will be hanging free, permitting you to raise the stamp from the water with the tweezers.

Dry the stamp on an absorbent surface then press using a hardcover book. Stamp collectors are very patient people, and show a lot of precision when handling stamps.

2. Take the flattened stamp and position it inside the album. You may also store it in small, clear plastic envelopes used by stamp collectors.

What are the different stamp designs?

Whether you’re an avid collector or an interested beginner, you know that stamps are varied, beautiful works of art that might just get phased out with increasing advances in technology. Think of stamp collecting as a way of preserving this art works.

1. Commemorative stamps are those released by the local postal service for a duration. These usually feature special people or group of people and events.

2. Nature, animals, artworks and paintings. Some stamps will look colorful and abstract. These are artworks of budding and famous artists immortalized in stamps. There are many who won’t see the value of these but those who think far into the future will realize that these are worth collecting. The younger generations must be willing to take on the fun of stamp collecting, and it is the role of their elders to point them in that direction.
