The Roomie Issue I

Scenario: Student Dorm

When a freshman arrives at school, part of the excitement is meeting the new room mate. Almost all colleges offer shared rooms, and majority of the solo rooms are available only to upperclassmen. What if a student arrives first in the dorm and no roomie is in sight? Here are some tips to make a really good first impression, after all you will have to live with that person for a time.

1. Shopping – Just the basics. A table, two chairs and a few kitchen utensils if a kitchen is a part of the room. Some of the more personal accessories you can shop with your room mate in tow, so that there are no design clashes.

2. Check the room – Make sure the lighting is ok, the electricity works and water is available. Having to show the room to the new room mate is the privilege of the first one to arrive. It is also a good idea at this time to get the dimensions of the room so you can properly plan out what to bring. This is also a good conversation starter.

3. Keep your stuff on your side of the room – Nothing is more annoying than arriving and finding that no space is immediately available for your heavy baggages and furnitures. Make sure a lot of room is available to your room mate for stacking his things initially.

4. Find out the dorm rules and get a copy. – A nice first discussion with your room mate is about the dorm rules. You can rant or agree about the curfew, set your own room rules, and designate cleaning turns. Do this while you are still diplomatically discussing the newness of things. If you are more comfortable with each other, you can print out the rules and put them up someplace conspicuous.
